Understanding NCEA Endorsements

NCEA endorsements recognise strong achievement in an NCEA qualification or an individual course. Learn how certificate and course endorsements work, what credits you need, and how to track your progress.

TWO TYPES OF ENDORSEMENTS

01
Certificate Endorsement Merit or Excellence recognition
02
Course Endorsement Recognition within an individual course

What Are NCEA Endorsements?

An NCEA endorsement is a way of recognising strong achievement. There are two main types: a certificate endorsement, which recognises achievement across an NCEA qualification, and a course endorsement, which recognises achievement in a particular course.

Certificate Endorsement

A certificate endorsement recognises a strong overall pattern of Merit or Excellence achievement at the relevant NCEA level.

Course Endorsement

A course endorsement recognises strong achievement within an individual course when the required credit and assessment conditions are met.

Why It Matters

Understanding the two endorsement types helps you read your results and see what achievement you may be working toward.

How NCEA Endorsements Work

NCEA endorsements have two different purposes. A certificate endorsement recognises achievement across an NCEA qualification, while a course endorsement recognises strong achievement within a particular course.

Two different types of recognition

You can work toward a certificate endorsement and course endorsements at the same time. The requirements are different, so check each type separately when tracking your progress.

What Is an NCEA Certificate Endorsement?

A certificate endorsement recognises strong achievement across an NCEA qualification. It is awarded at Merit or Excellence level when you meet the required number of qualifying credits at the relevant NCEA level or above.

01

Merit Certificate Endorsement

You can receive a Merit endorsement when you achieve at least 50 credits at Merit or Excellence at the level of the certificate or above.

02

Excellence Certificate Endorsement

You can receive an Excellence endorsement when you achieve at least 50 Excellence credits at the level of the certificate or above.

The credits must meet the certificate endorsement rules

Not every credit automatically contributes to a certificate endorsement. The credits must meet the applicable NCEA endorsement requirements, so check your results and current NZQA guidance when tracking your progress.

How Merit and Excellence Certificate Endorsements Work

A certificate endorsement is based on the level and type of achievement in your qualifying credits. There are two certificate endorsement levels: Merit and Excellence.

MERIT ENDORSEMENT

50 Merit or Excellence Credits

A Merit certificate endorsement requires at least 50 credits at Merit or Excellence at the level of the NCEA certificate or above.

EXCELLENCE ENDORSEMENT

50 Excellence Credits

An Excellence certificate endorsement requires at least 50 Excellence credits at the level of the NCEA certificate or above.

Credits must be at the certificate level or above

The endorsement rules consider both the NCEA level you are working toward and the level of the credits you have achieved. Credits from a higher NCEA level can also contribute where the endorsement rules allow.

Merit and Excellence are different thresholds

Having 50 Merit or Excellence credits does not automatically mean you have an Excellence endorsement. Excellence endorsement requires 50 qualifying Excellence credits.

What Is an NCEA Certificate Endorsement

What Is an NCEA Course Endorsement?

A course endorsement recognises strong achievement in an individual course during a single school year. It is separate from a certificate endorsement and can be awarded at Achieved, Merit or Excellence.

01

14 or More Credits

For most courses, you need at least 14 credits at Achieved, Merit or Excellence within the same school year.

02

Internal and External Credits

For most courses, the eligible credits must include at least 3 internally assessed credits and 3 externally assessed credits.

03

Three Endorsement Levels

A course can be endorsed at Achieved, Merit or Excellence, depending on the grades earned across the eligible credits.

You can earn a course endorsement independently

You may receive a course endorsement even if you do not achieve the NCEA certificate for that level. The course endorsement has its own requirements, so check the current rules for your course.

How Course Endorsements Are Calculated

A course endorsement is based on eligible credits achieved within the same school year. The grade pattern across those credits determines whether the course is endorsed at Achieved, Merit or Excellence.

01

Meet the Credit Threshold

You generally need at least 14 eligible credits in the course during the same school year.

02

Include Required Assessment Types

For most courses, the 14 credits must include at least 3 internally assessed credits and 3 externally assessed credits.

03

Look at Your Grades

The grades you achieve across the eligible credits determine whether the course receives an Achieved, Merit or Excellence endorsement.

Example

If you achieve 14 eligible credits in one course during the same school year and meet the applicable internal and external assessment requirements, those results can be considered for a course endorsement. The final endorsement level depends on the grades achieved.

Check the rules for your specific course

Some courses have approved exemptions from the usual internal or external credit requirements. Always use the current NZQA guidance and your school’s assessment information when checking whether your credits qualify.

Certificate Endorsement vs Course Endorsement

The two endorsement types recognise different kinds of achievement. A certificate endorsement looks across an NCEA qualification, while a course endorsement focuses on achievement in one course.

Feature Certificate Endorsement Course Endorsement
What it recognises Achievement across an NCEA qualification. Achievement within an individual course.
Endorsement levels Merit or Excellence. Achieved, Merit or Excellence.
Credit requirement At least 50 qualifying credits at the certificate level or above. Generally at least 14 eligible credits in the course during one school year.
Assessment focus Looks at qualifying credits for the NCEA certificate. Generally requires at least 3 internal and 3 external credits, subject to approved exemptions.
Scope Qualification-level recognition. Individual-course recognition.

Certificate endorsement

Think about your overall qualifying achievement at the relevant NCEA level. The focus is on reaching the required Merit or Excellence credit threshold.

Course endorsement

Think about one particular course and the eligible credits you achieved in that course during the same school year.

Certificate Endorsement vs Course Endorsement

How Endorsements Appear in Your Results

Once your results have been processed, qualifying endorsements can be shown as part of your NCEA results information. The way you view your results depends on the NZQA record or service you are using.

01

Certificate Endorsement

A qualifying Merit or Excellence certificate endorsement can be recorded with the relevant NCEA qualification.

02

Course Endorsement

A qualifying course endorsement can be shown with the relevant course or subject results for the applicable assessment year.

03

Record of Achievement

Your Record of Achievement provides an official record of your NCEA achievements and can include endorsement information.

Check your official results

If you are unsure whether an endorsement has been awarded, check your current NZQA results and Record of Achievement. Your school can also help you understand how your results have been recorded.

How to Check Your NCEA Endorsement Progress

Tracking your results can help you see whether you are working toward a certificate endorsement or a course endorsement. Check your credits and grades regularly rather than relying on a single result.

01

Check Your Results

Review your current NCEA results and look at the credits you have achieved, including the grades attached to those credits.

02

Identify Eligible Credits

For certificate endorsement, consider qualifying credits at the relevant level or above. For course endorsement, focus on eligible credits within the individual course.

03

Ask Your School

Your school can help confirm which standards and credits count toward your particular endorsement and explain your assessment plan.

When checking your progress, look at:

  • Your achieved credits
  • The grades you received
  • The NCEA level of each credit
  • Whether credits are eligible for endorsement
  • Internal and external assessment results
  • The current NZQA endorsement requirements
Use your official results when making a final check

Credit totals can change as results are processed or updated. If your progress is unclear, check your current NZQA results and speak with your school before assuming that you have or have not met an endorsement requirement.

NCEA Endorsements and Multi-Level Study

Some students study courses or achieve credits at more than one NCEA level during the same year. In these situations, it is important to understand which credits are relevant to the endorsement you are working toward.

01

Certificate Endorsement

For a certificate endorsement, qualifying Merit and Excellence credits are considered at the level of the NCEA certificate or above, subject to the endorsement rules.

02

Course Endorsement

A course endorsement focuses on an individual course and generally considers eligible credits achieved in that course during the same school year.

03

Check Each Requirement

Studying across levels does not mean every credit automatically counts toward every endorsement. Check the level, grade and eligibility of your credits.

Multi-level study can make your results harder to track

If you are taking courses at different NCEA levels, ask your school to confirm how your credits contribute to the endorsement you are targeting. Use your current NZQA results and the latest endorsement rules for the final check.

How to Check Your NCEA Endorsement Progress

What to Do If You Are Close to an Endorsement

If your results show that you are close to an endorsement, check the exact requirements before deciding what you need to achieve next. A small difference in the type, level or eligibility of a credit can affect your progress.

01

Check Your Credits

Review your current results and identify the credits that may contribute to your certificate or course endorsement.

02

Check the Grades

For certificate endorsement, look at your Merit and Excellence credits. For course endorsement, check the grades across your eligible course credits.

03

Talk to Your School

Ask your school to confirm which credits count and whether there are upcoming assessment opportunities relevant to your course or qualification.

Before you make a final decision, check:

Your current NZQA results, the level of each credit, the grade achieved, the assessment type, and the latest endorsement requirements that apply to your situation.

Being close does not automatically mean you have met the requirement

Endorsement decisions depend on the applicable NZQA rules and your processed results. If something is unclear, your school or NZQA can help confirm your position.
